MARTIN COUNTY – Live music is a passion for many people, and yet it is rare to see female artists take center stage. But one series of shows – developed by Hobe Sound resident Jodi Gaines – is working to encourage women to get into music and spreading a desire for them to develop hidden talents through donations of instruments. The shows, which have occurred throughout the summer, are called “Rockliscious,” and they feature a mix of local and national acts featuring female-led bands and acoustic musicians. The first show in the series was on June 1 at Terra Fermatta in Downtown Stuart, and national act Funky Biscuit appeared in Boca Raton with Danielle Nicole, Abby Owens and Cassie Ortiz on July 3 with a sold-out show. “I’m a musician, and being out and about playing I noticed that there weren’t a whole lot of women – especially on the acoustic side and even playing in bands – and I wanted to give them the opportunity to lay bigger venues,” Ms. Gaines said. “This is the last event for the summer, but we are working on some venues for the fall and winter series and we’re going to stick around a couple of counties and then head into different areas of Florida and, hopefully, the southeastern states.”

Ms. Gaines is a native Floridian and singer/songwriter and acoustic musician, who runs JGE Productions in her hometown, and she said the series was her way of encouraging female artists to jump into the ring typically occupied by their male counterparts. “Terra Fermata and Ron Hart are the ones who gave us our break; they booked our first show and we were very grateful to Ron for doing that and seeing the vision as well,” Ms. Gaines said. The final summer show will return to Terra Fermata at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, with The Betty Fox Band and Ms. Gaines and Cassie Ortiz also will be on the bill. Sponsors and Terra Fermata have kicked in their support and the ticket prices will be low at $8 per person. Those sponsors include Lagunitas Brewing Company, Rain Cat Recording Studios, Marsh Amplifications, Wolfe Guitar, Femarelle, Lawrence Taube, Attorney at Law and others. Advanced tickets can be purchased at www.terrafermata.com, and the first 30 tickets sold will receive a free Lagunitas Beer glass.

The event has joined nonprofit group Peace, Love and Music Inc. to create the Rockliscious Scholarship for Girls, and that effort provides music education and an instrument to at-risk youth. To help fund the scholarship, the event will feature a raffle for a Daisy Rocks acoustic guitar along with two BEM wireless speakers. Raffle tickets will be $5 each – or 5 for $20 – and can be purchased at the show or online. Additional funding sources include merchandise sales and at-venue donations. Winners will be chosen and announced following The Betty Fox Band on Sept. 1, and they do not need to be present to win. “If they get that scholarship, they get it for a year and they can take music lessons or get mentorship and get an instrument of their choice,” Ms. Gaines said. “So, if they’re hesitant to get into music to begin with, because they didn’t have the funds to take those extra lessons, it allows them to do that.” Live music is something Mr. Hart – who owns Terra Fermata – has encouraged throughout his life, and this series – for him – helps cover a lot of territory: It gives exposure to local and regional artists and makes live performances more accessible to women with burgeoning talents. “Any time that anybody wants to give to the community – which is what Rocklicious is all about, trying to increase awareness and give back to the community – that’s a concept I’m all for,” Mr. Hart said. “Discovering new artists, especially female-related stuff, is a good thing.” For more information about the event, please visit the event page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Rocklicious.Events/.
